For home, recreation, and on the road: Innovation and information for child safety
Daimler presents automated child seat recognition
Accidents and injuries are the number one cause of death in Europe for children and teens. In Germany alone, every 18 seconds a child is injured badly enough to require medical treatment. Accidents on the road, at home and during recreation remain one of the biggest health and safety threats for children. That’s why safety is one of the major themes at this year’s Kind + Jugend trade show being held in Cologne 11 - 14 September 2008. Coming after its successful premiere last year, the House of Safety is back with a host of innovative child safety products, new offers and information, now led by independent quality and safety inspection organisation TÜV Rheinland. While ensuring that all products exhibited as part of the TÜV Rheinland House of Safety in Hall 11.1 meet the latest safety standards, the inspection specialists of this international service provider will also act as trade show contacts, hold presentations on a range of safety related topics and conduct tours. The t wo-fold mission of the House of Safety is to disseminate important child safety information for home, travel and recreational environments to product retailers and such influential service providers as midwives, childcare professionals and educators, and to serve as a platform for the introduction of new products in combination with the necessary advice. After all, it is not simply about product development, but rather enhancing child safety and educating about risks. Children are only protected when adults are adequately informed of potential dangers and able to implement safety precautions.
Safety on the road and at home Though there have been significant improvements in child automotive safety, there is still a need for education, as well as room for further technical advances. That’s why a separate section of the TÜV Rheinland House of Safety is dedicated to child safety in the car, in partnership with the internet portal www.autokindersitz.at, where several features such as automatic airbag deactivation are presented. Daimler presents automated child seat recognition for a range of models. Sensors located in the vehicle seats recognise the presence of a child safety carseat by detecting a chip contained inside the child seat, upon which airbags are deactivated. A range of child safety seats are also being exhibited, providing an opportunity to demonstrate how they are properly secured. TÜV Rheinland will also be providing information on the proper use of restraint systems.
Even at home there are numerous child safety hazards, like hot stove burners, unsecure changing tables and doors able to catch little fingers. Thus another section of the TÜV Rheinland House of Safety presents safety products for kitchen, children’s room and bath, where dangers like these exist.
Forum discussion with panel of experts The TÜV Rheinland House of Safety will also feature a forum discussion with a panel of experts from TÜV Rheinland on safety issues concerning playgrounds, child furniture and toxic substances found in children’s products. Additionally, French market research organisation Insitut des Mamans will be conducting presentations on Thursday and Friday, 11-12 September. These will provide a comparative look at pro-family policies throughout Europe in particular relation to women’s rights, and resulting country-specific marketing requirements with an additional view towards national market size. Rounding out the programme will be presentations by market research firm npd Group/Eurotoys on Europe’s national markets for children’s products and by child safety product exhibitors.
