Facts about Turkish Fair Industry..
Currently there are 157 domestic organisers with certificate of authorisation to organise fairs.
2008 domestic fair calendar has 439 fairs organized by 124 organization companies. (But it is open to modification up to en of this year). There were 477 fairs in Turkey in 2007. 75 of these fairs were international specialisation fairs.
2009 domestic trade fair calendar announced by The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey at the 15th of September. This calendar includes 422 trade fairs.
The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey has been authorised to issue annual calendars for domestic fairs, to give certificate of authorisation for organising domestic fairs, and to pass and implement legislation governing domestic fair organisations.
In every December, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey issues the domestic fair calendar for the following year. Changes in the annual calendar are reflected in the revised calendars published in each month.
There are 30 fair areas in our country which are suitable for national and international exhibition organisations. The total closed area is 490.000 sqm.
The two largest fair areas in our country are in İstanbul. These are Istanbul Expo Center (including CNR EXPO) with 100.000 sqm closed fair area capacity and Tüyap Beylikdüzü Inernational Exhibiton and Congress Center with 60.000 sqm closed area capacity.
In Turkey, exhibition of overseas trade fairs are supported by Government under national participation and individual participation trade fairs titles. National participation trade fairs contain from Tukish pavilions in overseas fairs or trade fairs organized by Turkish organizers in foreign countries. Instead individual participation fairs calendar obtained from the overseas fairs that Turkish exporters exhibit individually.
Rules for organising overseas national participation fairs and for supporting the participation in overseas fairs are set and controlled by the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade-DTM. Annual calendar of overseas national participation fairs is also issued by the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade-DTM.
Organising national participation fairs abroad is possible only by obtaining a “certificate of authorisation to organise national participation fairs” issued by the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade. There are 28 organising companies that have certificate of authorisation to organise national participation fairs abroad. 9 of them are exporters’ unions and societies and 19 are private organisations.
In 2007, there were 245 national fair participations in 50 countries. There are 269 fairs in 2008 calendar of national participation fairs. 2009 National Participation Overseas Trade Show Calendar announced by Undersecretrait of Foreign Trade also. The calendar that covers first six month of the year includes totally 67 fair organised in 35 different countries
Overseas national trade fair participations is encouraged by the government in order to improve export performance of the country. Within the scope of the incentive system managed by the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade, fair participants may, depending on certain criteria, ask for reimbursement from the government for up to 50% of their participation costs.
Individual participation in overseas fairs is also supported by Turkis Government. In that sense, the Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade has been authorised to determine the fairs to be supported under “Individual Participation Fairs”and the ratio of support. At 2007 a total of 2056 fairs were supported in 69 countries. Instead 2008 individul trade fairs calendar includes totally 2068 trade fairs.
In our country, there are 18 UFI-member fair organising companies. And there are 42 UFI-certified fairs.
“Exhibition Standards” which defines the minimum standards for fair organisations and fair areas in our country and which is prepared jointly by Turkish Fair Organisers Association and Turkish Standards Institute was published last year. Standards are in pilot implementation phase.
